Observation Data analysis ROUGH
For the purpose of this analysis, Head Teacher will be noted as H, and the assistant teacher will be noted as A.
H begins the class by leading them in their circle time activities. These activities include doing the pledge of allegiance, the calendar, the weather, and the theme of the day. While this was happening A was not involved in the class dynamic, rather, A was involved in preparing for the next activity which was morning snack time. As the children sat down to begin eating both teachers assisted the students as necessary without direction. The students receive "Daily" sheets that explain what they participate in and what they eat for lunch and how long they nap for. The Dailies are filled out with all the activities by the head teacher prior, but the assistant teacher is who updates them based on the students performance that day.
At this point the students were engaged in their morning play time with was following their circle time activities. During this time both teachers were engaging in addressing behavioral issues that some students were exhibiting. What was interesting that each teacher was responding to whatever teachers name a child said. Neither one neglected a child if they said the wrong name or just outwardly addressed a teacher. Both were equally there ready to respond to the students. During this time the teachers were talking about a particular students progress in the class. They were talking and communication very well about previous conversations they have both had with that parent, and and how they are both planning to work with this child. The conversation was equal between both parts. Both were listening to one another and comparing thoughts both about the child's work and the parent response.
Finally this time, morning play was over and the children were ready for their snack. The head teacher took them outside to wash their hands while the assistant waited inside and sat the children down as they came in and got them ready to eat. This included helping them open their snacks and encouraging them to try to open some of their packages. When the head teacher returned with the few remaining children she too jumped right into getting the children settled. Now each teacher was at one table watching the children and making sure they didn't make a mess. Following the snack time, academic work and projects followed. The assistant teacher cleaned the tables while the head teacher began gathering the worksheets for the day. The head teacher distributed the worksheets and the markers, while the assistant teacher handed out name tags to certain students and alphabet tags to some who needed the extra support. The children at this time were still at two separate tables and each teacher was responsible for one table. As the students began to complete the worksheets the assistant teacher went around with a stamp to mark the students complete work. While all this is happening the head teacher was the main person who explained the directions and led the class. The next activity was a letter book and the head teacher was responsible for getting the students to color the pictures appropriately while the assistant was responsible for assembling the books.
The next activity scheduled for this day was having the students make a teepee for the thanksgiving holiday. Again each teacher sat at one table and enforced the task to the students that they were working with. Both teachers were encouraging the students and were repeating each other often. The head teacher consulted the assistant about part of the project and the two had a quick conversation which came to a decision right then and there. Throughout this entire activity the responsibilities of each teacher were unsaid and they both knew where they were supposed to be and what they were supposed to be doing. Next, a conversation occurred about a last minute activity that the head teacher wanted to complete. Without a conversation the assistant teacher began preparing. This was the best example of unsaid communication that I could have witnessed because in about less than two minutes each teacher was ready and so were all the materials. This was a multistep project and again without conversation the head teacher began and the assistant teacher followed right behind and the activity was completed in an organized and timely way.
Next the students were dismissed to their afternoon playtime. The head teacher took the initiative to place the students in centers while the assistant continued to clean up the art projects that were just completed. Again the teachers both equally responded to the children while they were playing. After some time to play, both teachers led the students into a circle time activity before lunch time. The head teacher read a book to the students while the assistant teacher sat on the side of the circle listening with the students. Then they practiced songs for their holiday show that both participated and engaged the students in. During this time the assistant teacher excused herself to begin setting up lunches.
After this the head teacher again took students to wash their hands, while the assistant finished setting up lunch. Both teachers helped the students finish their food and the assistant recorded what each child ate on their daily sheets. The children cleaned up their lunches and the head teacher cleaned the tabled while the assistant teacher put out the cots and out on the napping music so the children were ready to nap when they were finished.
